After increasing steadily from 2000 to 2011, the rate of C. diff infections in health care facilities has decreased. Analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Infection CDC) found that C. diff infection rates decreased between 9 and 15 percent from 2011 to 2015, reports Collective Evolution.

Researchers credit antimicrobial stewardship programs set up in hospitals for the decrease in infections. These programs included guidelines setting stricter cleaning and infection control protocols and restricting antibiotic prescriptions. However, researchers say there is still much work to be done to eliminate C. diff in hospitals and nursing homes.
